Texas State Open Another Big Sports Draw For Tyler

The Texas State Open. The NJCAA Division III World Series. The 4A state football championship.

Tylerites no longer have to go to the sports, sports have come to Tyler.

"One of the main reasons is that recently we've had a lot more events that have garnered a lot of attention," said Valerie Morby, Assistant Vice President of SPORTyler.

Events like the Texas State Open are not just about a game for East Texas. It's about dollars. Dollars that help your roads, your schools, and your businesses.

"When people come out to these events, they stay at the hotels. They eat at the restaurants or they might buy some items they need at the store," said Tom Mullins with the Economic Development Council. "Some buy souvenirs. On average they are going to spend slightly more than $100 a day in Tyler."

The Texas State Open is in it's second year of a three year contract with Tyler. Over that time period, about $3 million dollars are expected to pump into the economy.

"We are having about 120 Pro-Am players and 160 for the Open," Morby said. "We count on each of them bringing about four people with them like their caddies and their families, spouses, friends. So with everyone coming into town, we're counting on $650 thousand for just this one event.

With those kind of dollars you can expect to see more big sporting events hitting Tyler.

"Tyler is a great place for sporting events," Morby said. "Especially for people who are coming from all over the country. It being a smaller city but also being able to offer sporting venues and a lot of hotels."
