Texas State Open Festivities Begin

With past winners like Ben Crenshaw, Lee Trevino and Jeff Maggert, the Texas State Open is one of the most storied professional golf events in the state. Festivities kicked off today in Tyler with the annual pro-am, giving the pros, like Hideaway Lake's Brad Weesner, a chance to see the course for the first time.

"It's obviously playing longer this year because of it being a little wetter than it was," said Weesner, who finished 4th at the Texas State Open last year.  "The rough is up a little bit, the greens are a little bit softer.  I think it'll play a little tougher than it did last year."

Weesner faces some stiff competition this year.  There are dozens of Nationwide Tour veterans, as well as U.S. Open qualifier Todd Rossetti, and two-time PGA Tour winner David Ogrin, who appreciates the quality of this tournament.

"The only other time I played in the Texas State Open, Ben Crenshaw won it that year," Ogrin said, "so there was a time when the tour players made it a point to come back and play, and this is the first time ever since I lived in Texas it actually fell on a date and time and place that I could make so I'm kind of glad to be here."

Play begins Thursday morning.

A free kids golf clinic will be held at The Cascades Wednesday evening at 5pm.

On a hot, humid East Texas Monday, Jake Arledge sat and visited with Angelina Baseball Coach Jeff Livin. After the morning talk the two would leave the AC cooled office and venture into the heat to look for an apartment. Five years ago, Arledge would have never thought his life would bring him to Lufkin.
