Rains Damage Roads Across East Texas

Getting around has become a lot more difficult for some East Texas drivers, as the heavy rains continue to damage our roads.  In Smith County, four roads remain closed tonight.  They are County Roads 2301, 474, 496 and 472.  A large sinkhole sits on County Road 23-01 after a culvert gives way.  In Northern Smith County, it's a similar scene on County Road 472.  Another problem roads crews are seeing is downed trees, as many of them just cannot hold in the saturated soil.  Right now, the county says it's asking for the public's patience.

"We are getting after it as quick as we can," said Smith County Road and Bridge Engineer Bill Bala.  "Clearly, we have some priority work that has to be done.  So far this year we have already had 183 calls.  Last year we had 150, and the year is only half done."  County officials say they're not sure how long it will take to repair the damaged roads.  TxDOT is helping by providing some dry materials to fix the roads.
