You & Your Child Can Learn How To Swim For Free, Learn About Water Safety

With the summer upon us one thing on many minds is swimming, but with the swimming comes danger. Just this year 35 children have drowned in the state of Texas.

Tuesday in Tyler Child Protective Services, the Tyler Fire Department and East Texas Medical Center joined together to teach water safety. The goal: to bring awareness to children and parents.  It only takes a few inches of water and about five minutes for a child to drown. Experts say the key is adult supervision at all times.

"We have seen several incidents where children have drown or almost drown. Parents really sometime don't realize how quickly a child can get into trouble at a pool," said Tyler Fire Captain Jeff Akin.

"Prevention is the key to any water safety issue. Make sure that you are applying fences around swimming pools. You've got to remove the hazard before it occurs. Recognition and Prevention would be the key to water safety," said Tim Morris Paramedic Supervisor for East Texas Medical Center.

The American Red Cross offers free swimming lessons Monday through Thursday at Fun Forest Pool in Tyler. Call the Red Cross for more information.
