High Speed Chase In Harrison County

A wild scene on an East Texas interstate last night, as a Louisiana man takes police on a 14 mile high speed chase, eventually crashing into a sheriffs patrol car before being caught.

It happened around 10 o'clock last night on I-20, when Harrison county deputies say they clocked an eastbound car going almost 100 miles per hour. It started near FM 3251 just west of Highway 43. A damaged cable retainer on I-20 may have been the only thing that kept two motorists and a sheriff's deputy from being killed.

"We're just thrilled to death that nobody's hurt any more seriously than what they are" said Captain Mike Alexander of the Harrison County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say they were in pursuit of 29 year old Danille Hanspard of Louisiana after he was clocked going 97 miles per hour. In a move called boxing, deputy Michael Freeman raced ahead of Hanspard trying to slow Hanspard down.

"But you try to slow them down as much as possible so that they reduce their speed" Alexander said.

But Hanspard didn't slow down or try to avoid Freeman's unit. Instead he rammed him from behind, knocked him through a median, through a cable retainer and into oncoming traffic. Freeman's car slammed into two oncoming vehicles. He and both drivers were taken to Marshall Medical Center.

"Anytime that you try to stop ump-teen hundred pounds of moving metal , there's always some risk involved to other people. Even though he had a clear avenue to go around it he decided to push it off the road" said Alexander.

Hanspard crashed out a short distance away, and authorities tell us the 6-4, 400 pound suspect then resisted police attempts to arrest him.

"Unfortunately he's not cooperating with authorities at all this morning either," Alexander says.

Deputy Freeman had injuries to his head and chest, but has since been released from the hospital. A female driver's condition is said to be serious, but she is expected to recover. A third driver's condition is unknown.

Hanspard was charged with DWI, aggravated assault of a public servant with a deadly weapon, evading arrest and excessive speed.  He remains in the Harrison county jail.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
