East Texas Spurs Fans Go Long Way To Prove Their Loyalty

Their championship may not have been popular with NBA fans around the country, but the San Antonio Spurs have some hard core fans here in East Texas, with at least two willing to drive 10 hours just to say, Go Spurs Go!

In the heart of Mavericks country, Sytonia Freeman of Athens is a fanatic Spurs fan.

"It's awkward at church sometimes," Freeman joked.  "My husband and I have to watch the games by ourselves."

So when the Spurs championship parade was announced, Sytonia didn't hesitate. Just like in 2005, she knew she had to be there. And this time, her 10-year-old great nephew Anthony got to go with her.

"I was very excited," Anthony Darty said.  "I started jumping around and screaming and stuff and doing flips.

"I left right after sunday school at church yesterday," Freeman explained.

Anthony acknowledged, it was a long ride.

"We had to go through Austin and Waco," Anthony said with a sigh.

They picked up her sister and niece in Killeen, and her daughter in Austin, and with an hour and a-half to spare, they made it to the parade on the river walk.

"I was real close," Anthony said.  "I was on the river walk."

"We learned how to do the sweep, that's a new dance that they have," Freeman said, demonstrating the moves.  "We just met everybody cause they were all Spurs fans, so we had that in common. We didn't meet any strangers."

And they didn't waste much time. Immediately following the parade, they were back in the car for the 270 mile drive back to Athens.

Was it worth it?

"Uh-huh," Anthony said with authority.

"Yes, Yes," added Freeman without hesitation.  "I will do it tomorrow if they have something tomorrow."
