K-9 Deputy Retires From Force

A heartfelt goodbye, Wednesday, for an East Texas deputy K-9.  Seven-year-old Dax, a German Shepherd from Holland, is retiring from his almost four year tenure with the Gregg County Sheriff's Office. His handler says he started noticing Dax was moving slower and having trouble getting in and out of his unit. That's when it was discovered Dax suffers from hip dysplasia.

Permanent ownership of Dax has been turned over to his Deputy handler, Antonio Monsivais, who says, "it is very sad not only to me, also to my wife, he was so used to four years going to work with me everyday and now that I have to leave him at home, it's kind of hard to look back in the backyard and not bring him with me to work."

The county is looking to purchase a new K-9 later this month from the same dog training center in Holland.
