Standoff Suspect In Fair Condition

The female suspect, Evelyn Thornton, 66 involved in a six hour standoff Saturday, is in fair condition Sunday at ETMC in Tyler under police watch.  The standoff happened around 12:00 p.m. Saturday at Thornton's home on Outer Drive and 6th Street in Tyler.

Authorities say the whole thing began when Thornton fired a gun at her daughter, who came over to check on her. The suspect then barricaded herself in the home.  After negotiations and tear gas failed, police made their way inside confronting Thornton in a back closet.  Officials say the woman pointed her gun at police and that's when officers fired, grazing Thornton in the head.  Those who knew Thorton say in recent days they thought something was not right.

"I've been here over 15 years and never had any problems with her," said Lynn Collins, neighbor.  "I always see her picking up cans and trash in the neighborhood.  Real sweet lady. It's just a shock to see this happen."  Charges are expected to be filed against Thornton when she's released from the hospital.
