East Texans Help Ministry Hit By Thieves

Less than 24 hours after learning about a local ministry hit by thieves, East Texans were there to help.  The Smith Baptist Association Volunteer Builders have constructed more than 60 churches all for free.  Tuesday, we learned their mission had come to a hault after thieves took more than $10,000 worth of tools.  With every donation Wednesday, they are building their way back to business.

Starting early Wednesday morning, East Texans were ready to help with tools and a check book in their hand.

"I know what it's like to get your stuff stolen," said Joe Johnson, who donated tools Wednesday.  "I just felt sorry for them, and I wanted to help them out." So far, Smith Baptist Association Director of Missions Danny Pickens says people have donated dozens of tools and more than $3,000.

"The response has been excellent," said Pickens. "I got here at 8:30 a.m. and we open at 9:00 a.m., and the people were already waiting to bring us checks.  We've heard from people all over the area."  For volunteer builder, Eddie Harden every check and every tool that's donated is one step closer to continuing their ministry.

"The Lord is going to provide," said Harden.  "That's all there is to it.  The ministry means so much to the community, and I know it has touched the hearts of so many out there."

Volunteers say Wednesday's donations are just the beginning.  The Smith Baptist Association Volunteer Builders say they are in desperate need of air compressors, frame and nail guns and circular saws.  If you'd like to help, you can make a donation to the Smith Baptist Association Volunteer Builders on Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler.
