Memorial Weekend Starts Summer Recreation Season

Memorial Day weekend traditionally starts the boating and recreation season on East Texas lakes and rivers, and area lakes were hot spots this weekend.  Many are choosing recreation close to home because the price of gas makes traveling too expensive.   Like many East Texas lakes, Lake Gladewater saw plenty of business this weekend, as whole families came out for the traditional start of the boating and recreation season on East Texas waterways.

"Well, we're enjoying the kids and celebrating the season here so we got out of the house for a little bit," said Spring Hill resident Deanna Young.

But for many it was a logical alternative.  Gas prices have East Texans watching their budgets.  "We normally go to Lake O' the Pines, but the gas prices is outrageous, ain't no need in it," said Longview resident Billy Martindale.

"Well, we're staying close to home for several different reasons:  gas prices.  It helps out with economy and stay closer to home," said Susan Stanford of Hallsville.

Some have canceled plans for longer trips, and some have taken even more drastic steps.  "We decided to sell one of our automobiles to cut down on our commuting from Hallsville to Longview for work 'cause it saves gas.  We didn't have to spend the extra $40 to $60," said Stanford.

But most say it will only change their plans. They'll just stay closer to home for vacations.
