Austin Elementary School Closing Early Due To Gas Leak

According to a press release from Tyler ISD:

Austin Elementary School will close today at 11:30 a.m. due to a gas leak.  Students will be held at the Ramey Elementary Gymnasium until they are released to a parent.  Ramey Elementary is located at 2000 North Forest Street, Tyler.

We ask parents to come into the gym to sign out their child and bring proper identification for safety and security reasons.  Bus service cannot be provided for this early release because Tyler ISD cannot effectively notify parents and will not drop off students at homes where parents are not present.  All students and staff are safe and secure during this release time.

This morning Austin Elementary took precautionary measures at approximately 8:30 a.m. due to a gas line being broken at a residential construction site across from the school.  All children and staff were evacuated to the Ramey Elementary gym.  There were no reported injuries and the surrounding neighborhood was not evacuated.  TISD police were on hand to assist in the situation.

TISD maintenance and facilities personnel also took precautionary measures.  They shut off all air conditioners in both schools, turned off pilot lights and took gas detectors to see if anything further needed to be done.

According to authorities, it was determined that it was safe to return to the school.  However, the perception was that the odor of natural gas was still fairly strong so the district, decided to dismiss the T. J. Austin students immediately after lunch.

We anticipate a regular school day tomorrow, Tuesday, May 22.  Please listen to the local media outlets tomorrow morning in case there is a change.

We appreciate your assistance and cooperation during this time.
