All Saints Pitcher Eyed By Major League

If you ask All Saints Coach Jerry Courtney about his star pitcher, he has to smile.

"If he's not already, he's going to be the best pitcher that we've ever had here," Coach Courtney said.

That "he" is 16-year-old sophomore pitcher, Dillion Buhrkuhl.

Dillon has the kind of baseball talent major league scouts love and opponents hate. He can already hurl the ball at an eye popping 86 miles an hour.

"I used to watch Nolan Ryan pitch when I was little, about two or three, and I would imitate what he would do," Dillon said.

That imitation as a toddler could turn into a full blown copy cat performance if Dillon makes it to the majors.

Which he very well could.

The sophomore has already been invited to an elite Major League Baseball camp where the big scouts eye the next draft prospects.

Dillon hopes to wow the scouts the same way he wows the home fans with his specialty pitch.

"It's pretty much stick with the fastball and see what I can do with it."

What that fastball does is retire batters one right after the other.

"That's my main focus whenever I'm out there is to help my team win and that's it."

Dillon is 9-2 on the season. As long as he stands on the mound for All Saints they have a sure shot at the playoffs. Maybe if he makes it to the majors he can add some pitching to another home team, helping them to the post season: the Texas Rangers.

"I would like to," Dillon said. "Be able to have my friends and family come watch me if I did."

Dillon will be on the mound for the Trojans against Lubbock Christian Friday afternoon, trying to lead his team to the state finals. Their semi-final game is at 4 p-m at Waco ISD's Field Number One.

Moody Magic, a term coined by the Abilene Christian faithful to describe a supposed mystical aura around Moody Coliseum that gives the Wildcats a winning edge, is something the Stephen F. Austin men's basketball team fell victim to a season ago. Wednesday night, the 'Jacks cast a spell of their own - one of the defensive variety - to make sure their intrastate rivals wouldn't obtain a second-straight win in the series.
