92-Year-Old East Texan Gets His Dream From Jarvis Christian College

For one East Texas graduate Saturday, receiving his college diploma fulfilled a life-long goal.  It was his dream to get a degree, just like the rest of his family.

"I always wanted an education," said Obie Bowser, who received an Honorary Bachelor of Arts degree from Jarvis Christian College. "I wanted a gown on and a cap. I thought that was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life."

Growing up in Palestine, Obie was one of nine children in his family.  After his father got sick, Obie says he had to stay home and take care of the farm, so his younger siblings could go to college and get an education.

"Two brothers and one sister went to school at Jarvis, and I helped bring them to school and helped them get down here," said Bowser. After he moved off the farm, Obie became a pastor for 23 years, but he says he still always dreamed of getting a diploma.

Saturday morning, at age 92, that dream came true, as Jarvis presented him with a Honorary Bachelor of Arts degree.  "My grandfather has always been an inspiration to all of our family members," said Obie's Grandson Daryl Jackson. "As he told you, it means that no matter what don't give up hope."

"It's a blessing cause I've prayed for this, and the Lord answered my prayer," said Bowser.

Finally, with a diploma in his hand Obie can say like his siblings, he too graduated from Jarvis Christian College.  "I'm going to Hold on to it and read it and look at it and show it to folks that I've graduated," said Bowser.

Obie has three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
