Middle School Students Donate to LEGS Project

Some East Texas middle school students do their part to help others halfway around the world.  Pine Tree fifth and sixth graders presented a check for $10,500 to the LeTourneau University LEGS project.

The project creates low-cost prosthetic legs for amputees in underdeveloped countries. The middle schoolers held several fundraisers to raise enough money to pay for the group's airfare to Kenya this summer.

Stephen Ayers, LEGS Project Director, says, "They've literally given us the chance to head to Kenya in a couple of weeks. They have provided us with the opportunity to help probably be on this trip about 15 to 20 Kenyan amputees."

Because of their efforts, the Pine Tree middle schoolers have been awarded the Grand Champion award from the Texas Future Problem Solving Program.
