East Texas Breast Cancer Survivor Looks Forward To Relay For Life

There will be a sea of purple in East Texas this weekend as thousands of people gather for Van Zandt County's 11th annual Relay For Life.  The event brings awareness to the fight against cancer because every 13 seconds a Texan is diagnosed with the disease. It's also an event, one East Texan looks forward to every year.

"We are all together," said Sally Chitty, breast Cancer survivor. "We are not just breast cancer survivors.  There's a group of survivors of all kinds of cancers." Sally Chitty, 57 of Grand Saline was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000.  A mother of six, she had no idea the journey she was about to endeavor.

"My oncologist basically just told me to go home and get my fairs in order," said Chitty. "She didn't give me a time span, but it was a poor diagnosis at that time." Through the American Cancer Society, and events like Relay For Life, Sally learned what she had to do.

"You have to have this mindset that this disease is not going to beat you," said Chitty.  "You are going to beat it." It's on the track with hundreds of other cancer survivors, Sally says she feels the most comfort, knowing she beat the disease that affects so many people.

"Every year I get so excited because everybody's on the sidelines watching you go by and clapping and being so happy that you are here. We are not guaranteed, and we are not guaranteed for next year," said Chitty. That's why Sally says it's so important for people to support the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life, so others, like her, can live for the future, that is now so bright.

Around 1,500 people are expected to attend Friday night's Relay For Life in Van Zandt County.   It starts at 7:00 p.m. and goes until 7:00 Saturday morning. The event is at Canton High School's track and field on Highway 243.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
