East Texas High School Senior Is Pre-Admitted To Medical School
They call him an East Texas Doogie Howser. With a perfect 4.0 GPA and a perfect score on the math portion of the SAT, this Henderson High School student is on his way to medical school, and he's accomplished things academically many would only dream of.
He's taken every AP course Henderson High School offers. He took high school math as an 8th grader, and even finished the school district's math program a year early. It's safe to say, when it comes to education Jeffrey Smith, 18 is always one step ahead.
"God has given me some intelligence I think, but I mainly had to work really hard and decide that this is the thing I'm going to do," said Jeffrey Smith, Henderson High School Senior. "Try to be successful at school and just run with it." Jeffrey's academic journey has taken him to Baylor Medical School, where this spring he was selected among four incoming freshmen for pre-admission.
"I knew about a 100 people were applying, all the private schools and magnet schools and stuff, and here I am a little public school person, and you know I thought I would give it a shot, and it worked out," said Jeffrey. Jeffrey says he found his passion for medicine last summer when he was doing mission work in Mongolia. Henderson High School principal, Stacey Sullivan, says medicine is a perfect career for Jeffrey.
"Service is something that is part of his heart, and I believe that he will take his degree in medicine and use for the benefit of others," said Prinicipal Stacey Sullivan, Henderson High School. It probably won't be long, Sullivan says before Jeffrey's picture is added to Henderson's wall of distinguished alumni.
"That would be nice," said Jeffrey. "I don't know if I'm smart to hang with those guys, but it would definitely be an honor if 10 to 20 years from now I came back, and I saw my picture there." The schools says, you can almost count on it.
Academics is not all Jeffrey is good at. He was a member of the Henderson High School Golf Team and plays the drums in band, and no surprise here, Jeffrey is also the valedictorian of his class.
