High Tech Medicine Coming To Rural East Texas

It's cutting edge, medical technology that's normally only found larger cities, but that's all about to change for women across East Texas.

The ETMC mobile mammography unit is now equipped with digital mammography. It's quickly becoming the gold standard for breast imaging, but with a price tag of more than 600k, it's out of reach for doctors in most rural areas.

Todd Sigmon is the administrative director for ETMC's Cancer Institute.

He says, "We serve patients as far as 2 hours a way in their own communities, so we're able to bring this cutting edge technology to their own backdoor.  Again, these are technologies that probably would take many years for some of the more rural communities to be able to adopt."

The mobile mammography unit serves about 4,000 patients each year and is the first in eEst Texas to be equipped with digital technology.
