Rush JT's New Head Football Coach

The new John Tyler head football coach is an old face to the Lions.

Thursday night, the Tyler ISD school board voted unanimously to make defensive coordinator Dereck Rush the Lions new head coach.

This will be Rush's first head coaching job. Before joining the Lions in 2003, Rush served as defensive coordinator for Midland Christian High School and Odessa High School.

Rush played college football at Mississippi College and for a short time served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the team.

The news Thursday was kept quiet for most of the day. TISD Athletic Director Danny Long did not tell Rush he was John Tyler's new head coach until after the board had voted on the issue.

Long stressed after the vote that Rush was "a good guy" and when (Rush) could have left, he stayed with the Lions through the good years and the bad.

"When we made the decision to make the change with Coach Ratliff, Rush decided to stay and be the cement for those kids and carry them through the transition," Long said.

Some John Tyler players attended the meeting to hear the announcement.

"It's great," said wide receiver Detrich Morgan. "The football team is going to hear it all tonight. Tomorrow is going to be a great day at school. Everybody is going to be able to relax and know that we got Coach Rush as head coach like we wanted. So, we are going to look forward to going to the playoffs and hopefully going to state with him."

Rush will meet with his players and the media Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the John Tyler fieldhouse.
