Police officer escapes from submerged cruiser and makes arrest

Police say 16-year-old Christopher Marrero and two other men were breaking into these cars at the fountains apartments.

When police officers showed up, the men drove off, but didn't get very far. The suspects' stolen honda hit a tree then knocked over this light poll.

One suspect was critically injured he was rushed to o-r-m-c. Marrero and the other suspect tried to take off then came this patrol car. The policeman missed the light poll, but nose-dived into this pond. At first this officer was trapped in the sinking car. The water pressure was too strong. He had to wait until the entire vehicle was submerged before he could open the door and swim to safety.

Officer Jose Santalisas was a little wet, but not hurt.

When he got back on dry land, he actually captured marrero. The other suspect got away. Because of the crash, the police department will now launch an investigation to see if santalisas was driving recklessly. His supervisor maintains this was not a chase.
