Elected Officials Pleased With TISD Decision To Observe Memorial Day

District 6 Representative Leo Berman says he's pleased with TISD's decision to close for the Memorial Day holiday.   Berman, a combat veteran of 22 years, says what he looks forward to the most during the memorial day holiday is sharing the message with children that freedom is not free.   Representative Berman issued this statement:

"I'm very pleased as a veteran and a member of the Texas Veterans Commission, that the TISD board reversed their initial decision to hold school on Memorial Day. This is a sacred holiday to millions of Americans, which should always be set aside to honor the men and women who gave their all to maintain the freedom that we enjoy." Last night, Congressman Louie Gohmert told KLTV 7 he thought Tyler ISD would make the right decision, and allow Memorial Day to be observed. Today, he says TISD's decision to not hold school shows how much East Texans care.

"I think one of the good things here is that people had to reach back and question themselves on how do I feel about Memorial Day, and we found out," said Congressman Louie Gohmert, District 1.  "People care deeply about this, and it should mean a lot to us. I think that's why those of here love East Texas. We know where we came from. We know what we should be grateful for, and we know whom we should be grateful and that's very reassuring.  A veteran himself, Gohmert says he also wants to thank all those for expressing their concerns.

The Texas Department of Transportation is looking to help make traveling easier for travelers in Tyler. Street lights and traffic, that’s how some Tyler residents would describe South Broadway. “The congestion starts at about the toll road and it’s pretty heavily congested and goes most days to the Loop 323,” Tyler native Jerry Waldrup said. In 2017, South Broadway from Loop 323 to Toll 49 was ranked the 67th most congested roadway in Texas. Now TxDOT is con...More >>
