Over 100 Gravestones Toppled At East Texas Cemetery

More than a hundred grave markers are destroyed by vandals at an East Texas cemetery.  Palestine Police say on Sunday, vandals broke into the East Hill Cemetery.

Officers originally thought just a few monuments were destroyed, but dozens more were found the next morning.

"Well it sickens me..i've been in this business for over 30 years. I find this a despicable act of criminal mischief," said Assistant Police Chief Larry Mars.

Monument after monument after monument...toppled over

"The officer returned counting 122 gravestones. Estimating 40 to 50 sustaining some type of damage," said Mars, "it's senseless to come to a cemetary and cause such destruction."

Among the destroyed gravestones, some dated back to the 1700's.

After hearing the news, Fredia Woody came looking for the graves of her best friend's parents.

She told us, "I was concerned on whether or not there was any damage to their stones.
it's just heartbreaking. "

"Evidently they don't have a loved one that they have lost. But for Fredia and others, the damage has been done," said Mars "none of them are replaceable but the older they get certainly they are irreplaceable."

Right now, Palestine Police do not have any suspects. They say the people who are responsible will face felony charges.
