Roger Carson has a memorial in the front yard of his Tyler home dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attack and to his three best friends who lost their lives in Vietnam. Carson's friend, Rip Rubio, a Medal Of Honor winner, lost his life within a year of arrival in Vietnam. Close friend Roy McWilliams, who received the Silver Star, also died in Vietnam. A third friend, John Herd, was to die of Agent Orange exposure.
Although Carson was honorably discharged as a Major during an Armed Forces cutback, he has been active in the Vietnam Veterans of America, a founding member of Chapter 932 and founder of the new Longview Chapter.
