John Tyler Hires New Basketball Coach

John Tyler High School has a trifecta of jobs to fill with their principal, and football and basketball coaches. The first step forward was taken today.

TISD Athletic Director Danny Long introduced Gerald Anthony as the Lions new head basketball coach. Anthony, who has been a head coach at Troup, TK Gorman and Karnack, has spent the past six seasons as an assistant to Carl Love at John Tyler. He said you'll see a lot of similarities, but he's excited about putting his own stamp on the program.

"It's going to be interesting. It's going to be fun," Anthony said.  "This is kind of a dream job for me. Make no doubt about that. We're here to win."

"After you talked to everyone outside, inside," Long said about the coaching search, "(Anthony) was just the logical choice."

Anthony said getting back to the playoffs is his immediate goal, but he also said, you haven't accomplished anything until you get to Austin.   He should know something about getting to the state tournament. He did it four times while coaching at Gorman, winning two state championships.
