Patriots Score 20 To Win Number 21

The University of Texas at Tyler scored early and often on East Texas Baptist, pounding out twenty hits in a 20-0 win. Ryan Campbell threw a complete game shutout and Brett Amyx had a pair of homers.

The Patriots went to work early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first, with RBI from Joseph Towns (SO/Carrollton, TX), Zach James (SR/Palestine, TX), and a two-RBI double from Ryan Reidel (SO/Carrolton, TX). UT Tyler worked on ETBU, scoring Kendall Fox (SO/Carrollton, TX) on a pitching error in the second.

"Our mission is to have good at-bats in every situation. Every time up, you can't just lay back and try and hit the ball as far as you can. Guys did a good job of moving runners, and forcing (ETBU pitcher) Stagner to go deep in the count."

"That was the key, to lay off the offspeed stuff early, and make him get behind a fastball every now and again. We started with a big first inning, and Brett really opened it up for us."

Amyx (SR/Coppell, TX) hit his eighth and ninth homers of the season, finishing 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI. Jim Roberts (FR/Coppell, TX) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBI.

The star of the game, though, was Campbell (JR/Tomball, TX). Campbell went the complete nine innings, scattering four hits in the shutout. He struck out eight with no walks or wild pitches, and did not allow a runner past first all night long.

"Ryan was spectacular," Vilde said. "That's one of the best pitched games I've seen in college baseball. He was down in the zone, all pitches for strikes. Our pitching coaches Darrell (Richardson) and Stan (Phelps) have done a great job with him and his conditioning. I don't know if Ryan could throw a complete game when he got here in the fall, but he's turned into a complete game guy."

"It's nice to see a complete game shutout. You don't see a lot of those, it makes for a fun baseball night."

The Patriots will play a double-header against East Texas Baptist Saturday beginning at one. Those games will be at Irwin Field, and also live on the UT Tyler Sports Network.
