Drowning Victim Found At Lake Cherokee

The body of a drowning victim is found in Lake Cherokee, after a three-day search.  Divers from Longview and Rusk County found the drowning victim around 2:00 p.m.

"We recovered the victim through dragging operations. It definitely gives them some closure to have their son back there's still an element of not knowing until the recovery is made," said Texas Game Warden Kirk Permenter.

Daniel Sides, 23, of Allen, TX disappeared while swimming after his drifting boat in chilly waters on Friday.  His friends saw that he was in trouble and pleaded for him to come back.

"All indications do appear that it was probably just fatigue swimming trying to retrieve a boat that had drifted away from the island," said Rusk County Sheriff's Office Lt. Johnny Davidson.

He was lost off a popular picnic area called firecracker island. His family says he was a healthy young man who had recovered from a near fatal car crash to go onto college.  Now trying to make sense of his loss.

"You have to know your own abilities maybe he thought he could make that swim," said Permenter.

"It's a tragedy to lose a young life that has a lot ahead for him looking forward to him graduating college," Davidson said.

Daniel would have graduated from Stephen F. Austin university this year. The Sides family will take Daniel's body back to Allen to be laid to rest.
