Just after 2:30 p.m., the Smith County Fire Marshal was called out to the home at the Lakeway Harbor subdivision by Lake Palestine. The fire destroyed a home and two other buildings on the property.
The resident of the home was at his neighbor's when he found out his house was on fire. That resident, who did not want to speak on camera, rushed to get a water hose to put the blaze out.
Bystanders and neighbors came to his aid. They also helped to get his 14 dogs out to safety. Fire officials say their help kept the fire from spreading.
"We was coming across the long bridge and we seen the smoke and we came over here and decided to help just a little bit," said Toliver Thirkill, a good samaritan who stopped to help.
"We started grabbing water hoses from other neighbor houses and hooking em up to this one to try and save this house to keep it from spreading from the main fire onto the other houses," said Gordon Golemon, another person who helped.
No one was injured during the fire. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
