East Texas cancer survivors can participate in East Texas Medical Center Cancer Institute's 21st annual "Great Getaway" spring retreat May 1-3 at Pine Cove Conference Center, (the Woods campgrounds) located southwest of Tyler near Lake Palestine.
The retreat gives cancer survivors a chance to relax and refocus and provides opportunities for meeting others who share some of the same concerns associated with living with cancer. Any adult who has been diagnosed with cancer is invited to attend.
"This is a chance to get away from the stress of day-to-day life and enjoy the company of others who have been through similar experiences," said Maxie Weaver, ETMC Cancer Institute counselor. "The retreat is all about learning, relaxing and having fun."
Other healthcare professionals, including registered nurses and volunteers, as well as cancer survivors, will be on hand to assist with retreat activities.
The retreat provides participants a special time to talk with healthcare professionals, learn stress management techniques, have a stress-reducing massage, and much more.
Pine Cove offers comfortable, motel-style rooms that accommodate up to four people and have private baths. Linens and towels are provided. All lodging, meals and snacks are included in the $50 registration fee, and participants are encouraged to bring casual, comfortable clothing and a lightweight jacket.
Arrival time begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday, and the retreat will continue through 1:30 p.m. Thursday, closing with a special lunch program, which participants' families and friends may attend.
Registration forms and fees must be received by April 9. Space is limited and first priority will be given to first-time attendees. A limited number of scholarships are available if you need financial assistance to attend the camp.
