Monday night, the Texas House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed Jessica's Law. The bill is now on its way to the Senate.
Lawmakers added something extra to Jessica's Law. In response to the ongoing sex scandal at the Texas Youth Commission. The House version of Jessica's Law calls for life in prison or the death penalty for repeat child sex offenders.
Members passed the bill after two days of debate.
Because of the sex abuse scandal surrounding state juvenile facilities, lawmakers also approved an amendment to the bill. The amendment makes it a second-degree felony for a state employee to abuse a child and cover it up.
So far, no criminal charges have been brought in the investigation of the Texas Youth Commission. If passed, the new law could apply to those cases.
