Thomas Brooks Not Leaving John Tyler

"I'm going to stay here at John Tyler."

That's the answer many East Texans have been anxiously awaiting since word began spreading this weekend that John Tyler head football coach Thomas Brooks was being courted by Jasper.

After two years and two playoff appearances at John Tyler, head Coach Brooks was bound to receive interest from around the state. But until this past Friday, Brooks had dismissed the inquiries. He had no idea the buzz he would create, when he decided to pay his former school, and former athletic director in Jasper, a visit.

"It was no question in my mind what I wanted to do," Brooks said today. "I just felt like I owed (Jasper) that."

What Brooks wanted to do was stay in Tyler.

"I love the young men I'm working with," Brooks said.  "I love the faculty, I love the school, also our community."

And when that community overwhelmed him with concern over his possible departure, it reaffirmed his decision to remain a Lion.

"That makes you feel good to let you know that what you are doing here is appreciated," Brooks said.  "I told the players that I'm here with them. We came here to do something, to bring John Tyler back to where it was in the 90's when coach (Allen) Wilson was here. That's what we plan on doing, and the job, it's not finished yet.  So, hopefully this is my last coaching stop. I don't plan on moving anywhere again in coaching. So, I'm going to make the best of it, go to work and work hard and do what I can to help the team."
