Suspected copper thieves are blamed for about $100,000 in damage and property loss at a former hospital in Tyler. So far no arrests.
Tyler police say the owner of the former Community Hospital building on Friday stopped to check the property -- and discovered the damage.
Investigators say the suspects removed copper wire, pipes from the walls, bathroom fixtures and electrical conduit. Most of the 100 rooms were damaged. Higher metal prices have led to an increase in copper and similar thefts. Copper prices last May hit an all-time high of about four dollars per pound.
