Smith County commissioners took a step Friday to possibly put a jail bond on the November ballot. A negotiating team for the county presented a recommendation to commissioners this afternoon. Commissioners voted unanimously to hire Carter Goble Lee for $100,000. The company will put together a master plan and a jail plan.
Judge Joel Baker says he's confident once the firm's plan is in place, the proposal would go on the November ballot. "I am confident that the voters of Smith County will approve such a bond election if presented with the right proposal, then we could break ground as early as January of next year," said Baker.
"This was probably the shortest commissioners court and the most positive thing that's happened in a long time and it's very refreshing and we feel very good about it," said Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith.
