Local Student Will Chosen Miss National UNCF

The United Negro College Fund recently announced the winner of its 48th Annual Miss National UNCF competition, Kamren Williams, a senior majoring in biology at Jarvis Christian College, a member of the UNCF consortium of historically black colleges and universities. Along with the Miss UNCF crown, Williams, a native of Grapevine, Texas, will receive a $3,000 scholarship toward her remaining course work.

"God has truly blessed me," said Williams. "I am so excited and honored to have the opportunity to serve as Miss UNCF. The support of the Jarvis Christian College Family along with my family, friends and associates helped me win the Miss UNCF title, an honor that I will cherish for a lifetime," she continued. "I am extremely proud to represent this organization that is committed to raising funds to help young scholars achieve their dreams. I will strive to be the very best representative of Jarvis Christian College, and UNCF throughout my reign and in the years to come."

The winner of the Miss UNCF crown is determined by the amount raised by students at UNCF member colleges and universities. This year, under Williams' leadership, students from Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, TX raised a total of $17,889. Williams also participated in a number of community service projects, such as tutoring at her church and volunteering at a cardiologist's office. These outstanding efforts by Williams led her to being crowned Miss UNCF at the annual joint conference of the National Alumni Council (NAC) and it's subsidiary organization, the National Pre-Alumni Council (NPAC), which was held in Nashville, Jan. 31 to Feb. 4, 2007.

Williams will serve as an official UNCF representative at national events, including An Evening of Stars®, the annual UNCF national television special.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
