At the age of 94, E.E.Shirey is th oldest licensed barber in Texas. Shirey received his barber's license in 1934 and began barbering in Naples and Pittsburg where he charged 25 cents for a haircut and 15 cents for a shave.
Shirey says his busiest day was Saturdays when farm families would come into town for the "picture show" and shopping before getting haircuts and shaves. He often wouldn't close his shop until midnight.
During World War II, Shirey served as an Airforce medic. After the war he returned to East Texas and resumed barbering while working for the Postal Service. E.E.Shirey has been a barber for 73 years and 45 of those years has given haircuts and shaves free at the Omaha Health Center. He describes it as "just a way to help them out."
