Man Accused Of Killing His Mother Arraigned In Court

A Tyler man accused of killing his own mother appeared before a Smith County judge Monday.  James Cowart Jr., 45, was arraigned in Judge Jack Skeen's court on a charge of capital murder. Cowart was declared indigent and was appointed an attorney. Judge Skeen set his bond at $2-million.

On Saturday, the Smith County Sheriff's Department was called out to "Airways Motel" on Highway 64 West.  Inside, authorities say they found a woman who looked to have been beaten to death. She was identified as Martha Miller, 64.  Authorities say Miller was the manager of the motel and was last seen around 11:00 Friday night by someone who checked into the motel.   The Sheriff's Department spotted Cowart's Dodge pick-up at "Relax Inn" in Tyler. Deputies also found cash they believe was stolen from the motel.
