East Texas Woman Beaten To Death Authorities Say By Son

It is Smith County's first homicide of the year. Around 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning the Smith County Sheriff's Department was called out to Airways Motel on Highway 64 West. Inside, the sheriff's department says it found a woman who looked to have been beaten to death.   The man responsible, authorities say is James Cowart, Jr., 45 of Tyler who was arrested Saturday afternoon. Cowart is the victim's son.  The sheriff's department identified the victim as Martha Miller, 64. Authorities say Miller was the manager of the motel and was last seen around 11:00 p.m. Friday night by someone who checked into the motel. Saturday morning, the sheriff's department says Miller's older sister found her.

"She has it appears to us been beaten to death by a glass ash tray," said Sheriff J.B. Smith, Smith County Sheriff's Department. "Of course we won't be able to tell that until after the autopsy. "   Just after 11:00 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff's department spotted Miller's son James Cowart and his Dodge pick-up at Relax inn in Tyler. Deputies also found cash they believe was stolen from the motel.   Cowart has been charged with capital murder.
