Miami or Bust! Smith Family Leaves For Super Bowl

It is a once in a lifetime road trip for one East Texas family with Super Bowl glory at the end.

In just three days, Big Sandy's Lovie Smith could become the first black head coach to win an NFL championship.

Thursday night, members of the Smith family began their journey to Miami where the big game will take place. About 17 family members are making the 19 hour drive to Miami to support Lovie.

They family had custom shirts made for the occasion and Lovie's wife sent boxes of hats, shirts and even a Chicago Bears purse shaped like a football for Lovie's mother.

The family said getting ready for the trip has been chaos and even mom is feeling a bit of pregame jitters.

"I always get a little nervous before a big game. This might be a little different," Mae Smith said. "I've got to get out there and see how they are going to start playing and then I'll know whether to keep shaking or stop shaking."

"Today, has been about like every day since the Saints lost," said Lovie's sister, Martha Lemmons. "Hectic, so hectic from the moment we get up till we just fall dead asleep at night. I mean, so hectic."

The family expects to arrive in Miami Friday night.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
