Lock Down At John Tyler: Student Found With Large Knife

The campus of John Tyler High School was put under a high-level lock down Wednesday morning, after a report that a student had a handgun on campus.  A girl was taken into custody.  There was no gun, but the district says she had a large knife.

At about 10:45 a.m., TISD says a male student reported the name of a 17-year-old girl to the office, and school officials and TISD police officers spent about 20 minutes looking for her.   She was arrested without any problem in an office area.  The district says the entire campus was sealed off within minutes.

Authorities sent a letter home to parents, who are urged to talk to their children about safety.

"It's another way to reassure them.  If they have overheard a situation or if there is a sighting [of suspicious activity], they should report that information and administration will act on that information immediately," says district spokesperson Angela Jenkins.

The girl was taken to jail and faces a felony charge for having an illegal knife at school, with a blade more than five-and-a-half inches long.  The district is not releasing any details you about what the girl was doing with the knife.
