Pine Tree District Holds School Safety Summit

Officials at one East Texas school say they're ready for any violent situation that may arise on campus.   Monday, 300 teachers and administrators from Pine Tree School District in Longview attended an all day School Safety Summit.

The day opened with a speaker from Spokane, Washington who gave first hand information about what to do during a school shooting. Later, the teachers split up and discussed various topics including narcotics, where actual drugs were passed around so teachers could see what they looked like.

Principal Jason Mixon, Pine Tree High School, says,"you don't think it's going to happen to you, Spokane, WA didn't think it was going to happen to them, we have a lot of that same feeling, you know, it happens at other schools, well, what happens when it happens at your school? So we wanted to be proactive, have procedures in place."

The district is planning another all day summit for August to include surrounding school districts as well.
