Tyler ISD says it's new information that just came to light late Wednesday.
That one of the District's police officers did use pepper spray against a student in an on-campus brawl. Spokesperson Angela Jenkins tells KLTV 7 that two students began fighting in the gym at John Tyler High School during the JT/Robert E. Lee basketball game last night.
Jenkins told us Wednesday night what happened next:
"[The officer] gave a loud verbal command to stop. One student did stop. The second student did not and looked like he was about to hit the other student. And then our officer used all the necessary means to stop that and used the pepper spray."
Jenkins had told KLTV earlier Wednesday that neither officers from TISD nor Tyler Police used pepper spray. Now, she says the district did not have all the information until late Wednesday afternoon, until TISD's police chief had finished interviewing his officers.
A female student reported she was hit with pepper spray outside the JT gym, and was treated by paramedics. The district says it is still investigating how that happened.
