Indiana police continued to search Sunday for a man suspected of abducting his four children and their mother, Elkhart police said.

Police believe Jerry D. White, 30, broke into Kimberly Walker's home and shot her sister's fiance.

They believe he held Walker, the four children, and the injured man for more than nine hours -- preventing the man from getting medical attention -- and then abducted the mother and children, Sgt. Bill Wargo told CNN.

The man is in critical condition with two gunshot wounds, Wargo said. The children are Jaylan Walker, 9; Justin Walker, 8; Kyra Walker, 6, and Kayla Walker, 16 months. (Watch scene of kidnapping and pictures of missing children Video)

Police fear 9-year-old Jaylan could be in serious condition because he is a severe asthmatic and requires a ventilator every few hours. That ventilator was found at the residence in Elkhart, Wargo said.

During their 17-year relationship, White and Walker had several domestic violence situations, Wargo said.

Walker, 31, moved to Elkhart from the Chicago area in recent months, he said. White had followed Walker to Elkhart and is suspected of breaking into her home late Friday or early Saturday.

Elkhart police arrived at the residence at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, and learned that the victim had been shot around 1 a.m.

After speaking with members of the family and others, police believe White may be taking Walker and the children to the Chicago area.

Chicago police and the FBI were assisting in the investigation, Elkhart police said.

The Amber Alert said the children "are believed to be in extreme danger."

Police are not sure how they are traveling after discovering the two vehicles that they believed White might be driving, Wargo said. The two cars were found overnight in Elkhart, Wargo said on Sunday morning.
