Teen Accused Of Murdering His Grandmother In Pearland

A 19-year-old man is being held on murder charges. He's accused of killing his grandmother just hours after he was released from jail.

Pearland police were called to the family's home in the 2400 block of Garden Road by a neighbor who says he heard about the murder from a terrified family member. That neighbor tells Eyewitness News that he was pretty close to that family. He was friends with the suspect as well as the suspect's brother at one point.

It was that brother who came to him when all of this happened.

"He told him and then he told us what happened, that his brother just went psycho and started beating her to death," said neighbor Robert Holman.

It was a frantic cry for help when Holman says he learned of his neighbor's murder. The suspect's own brother described to him what happened.

"He said that she was on the ground unconscious and he was kicking her in the face, over and over," said Holman.

It happened around 7pm Friday at the Pearland home just hours after police say James Sawyer was released from jail. He allegedly attacked his 73-year-old grandmother.

Neighbors recall hearing the family's reaction.

"He was just screaming, 'Why did you do it?' and he was just saying 'Oh my God. Don't tell me. Don't tell me,'" said neighbor Emmanual Salinas.

"The suspect fled the house," said Sgt. Kevin Nichols with the Pearland Police Department. "He was later located at this property."

According to Sawyer's arrest record, he has been in and out of jail at least once on a drug charge.

Police still have no indication what prompted the murder. One of Sawyer's neighbors believes that drugs may have influenced his former friend.

"Something was going to happen from that kid, sooner or later," said Holman. "He was trouble."

Authorities gave Sawyer a drug test, but those results are not back yet. Meantime, Sawyer is being held at the Brazoria County jail. His bond was set at $250,000.

This is not Sawyer's first run in with police. In June of 2006, he was arrested for possessing less than two ounces of marijuana. In November he was arrested for burglary and earlier this month he was taken into custody for evading arrest. He was held in the Pasadena jail from January 5 until January 19. Police say it's on that day that he killed his grandmother.
