Two Citizens Honored With Unity Awards

On Friday, Longview recognized two outstanding citizens for their help in improving race relations in the city.   At the third annual awards luncheon, the 2007 Unity Awards were given to Dr. Jim Elam and Charles Newhouse. Newhouse has been an educator at LISD for the past 40 years and Elam served as senior minister of First Christian Church in Longview.

Charles Newhouse says, "it means that over the years I've tried to work with people, find the good in people regardless of color, regardless of status in life and trying to bring the best out of people."

Dr. Jim Elam says, "when it comes to race relations it's important for individuals to get involved themselves. So often we rely upon committees or government or school systems or whatever the institutions might be, but it's important for individuals to get involved."

The two were chosen by the Longview Race Relations Committee.
