TISD Votes To Install Camera System On Buses

School buses in TISD will soon have an extra set of eyes and ears.  At last night's board meeting, TISD trustees approved a surveillance system that would included video and audio recording.

The project is budgeted to cost just under $330,000 for the district's 130 buses. Two to three cameras would be installed in each bus, depending on its size. The system will be connected, allowing people monitoring buses to look at what's happening.

TISD says no specific incident led them to make the decision. They just thought it would be an added safety measure. "We've evaluated all of our safety and security measures that we have in place in campus and we thought, you know, 'We have students that are traveling to and from school. Let's add that safety umbrella to them as well and give it to our drivers to give them added protection,'" said TISD spokesperson Angela Jenkins.

The project is set to take place in two phases. The first phase, which would start in three weeks, would take care of the larger buses. The remaining buses would have cameras installed in the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
