Local Doctor's License Suspended After Prescription Fraud Arrest

A panel of the Texas Medical Board has temporarily suspended the license of Michael Lee Williams, of Palestine, after determining that Dr. Williams' continuation in the practice of medicine presents a continuing threat to the public welfare.

The action was based on many things, including several recent arrests. Dr. Williams was arrested and charged with assault/family violence on March 6 and May 29, 2006. He pled guilty to charges of assault/family violence on October 13. Dr. Williams has also been arrested and charged with prescription fraud.

The Texas Medical Board says Dr. Williams had a personal relationship with a patient; and that he wrote prescriptions for that patient "to support her acknowledged addiction to prescription medication". They go on to accused the Doctor of using a fake name, and his own name in writing those prescriptions.

The temporary suspension hearing took place Wednesday, January 10, and the suspension was effective immediately. The length of a temporary suspension order is indefinite but it remains in effect until the board takes further action.
