Students Host Senior Prom For Nursing Home Residents

Some East Texas seniors put on their dancing shoes and strutted their stuff to the sounds of the 1920s.  Wednesday, was the senior prom for folks from an East Texas nursing home.   These residents showed us they are truly young at heart.

The students from Winnsboro High School are hosting a prom for the residents at Whispering Pines Care Center.  The theme was 'A Vintage Affair.'  The prom is part of a school project. Melinda Cain is the Family Consumer Science Teacher at Winnsboro High School.

"One of our elements that we do in teaching is working with the elderly.  We have 3 students that we really interested in a community service project to benefit the elderly and bring the community together.  They researched the music from the time era from the 20s to 40s. We had a dance instructor come in and teach the student the dances and they researched cooking for diabetics," says Melinda.

The organizers of the senior prom are Ashlee Vanginault, Ashley Sowders and Savannah Spence.  They have been working on this event for months.

"It's been stressful, but once we got here and see everyone smiling and having a good time and dancing and it make it all worth it," says Ashlee.

Of course, every prom must have a king and queen. The queen is 57 year old Kathy Dickey and the king is 92 year old Henry Newton.  Henry says he was surprised the other residents voted him king.

"I wasn't expecting it," says Henry.

But he's enjoying every minute of being king for a day.
