Mental Retardation Hearing Begins For Man Sentenced To Death

A man sentenced to death for killing a 53-year-old Tyler woman is back in court. A hearing to determine whether Allen Bridgers, 35, is mentally retarded began Monday.   Bridger's mother was the first witness called to the stand. Linda Gorum testified that her son is mentally challenged. Bridges shot and killed Mary Amie, whom he lived with, in 1997. He was convicted in 1998. He was scheduled to be executed in 2001, but was granted a stay to pursue federal appeals.   If Bridgers is found to be mentally retarded by Judge Kent, his death sentence would be lessened to life in prison. That's because executing a mentally retarded person is unconstitutional.
