Less Invasive Mitral Valve Replacement Procedure

A less invasive procedure is available for those who need a heart valve repair or replacement. Until now, doctors would have to break the breastbone to perform the procedure.  Now, doctors are able to go in between your ribs, making just a 2 inch incision.  A few weeks ago, 43 year old Mark Wright underwent the mitral valve replacement surgery at Mother Frances Heart Institute.  He not only has a smaller incision, but his recovery time has been cut in half.

"Recovery has been pretty good.  I have been up walking as much as I can. It's been real well, just a little soreness," says Mark Wright.

"The advantage is cosmetic.  It's a lot less painful and patients are able to return to work in a soon fashion and so we are pretty excited about it," says Dr. Neelan Doolabh, Cardiac Surgeon, Turner Cardiovascular Associates.

Dr. Doolabh says this procedure cuts the recovery time down to 3 weeks rather than 8 weeks.
