One Student Dead After Being Shot Inside High School

A young person died after being shot at a high school Wednesday in Tacoma, Washington, police said.

The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital, a police spokesman said.

Police were looking for the shooter around Henry Foss High School, said Patti Holmgren, director for community relations for the Tacoma County School System.

Holmgren said police had not confirmed that either the shooter or the victim were students, although The Associated Press reported that a police spokesman identified the victim as a student.

'Something like fireworks'

"People came out of their classroom, and they heard something that sounded like fireworks, and they just saw the kid laying on the ground," a girl told CNN affiliate KIRO.

"I saw a girl running out of the cafeteria just screaming that someone was going to shoot her. And then she ran down the stairs of the courtyard and just went home."

The shooting happened between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m. (10:15 to 10:30 a.m. ET), Holmgren told CNN, right before classes were to begin. "Police immediately went into secure mode" until they had searched the building, she said.

Police have identified the suspect, and the building is secure. Buses were taking the students home.

"We know who he is," police spokesman Mark Fulghum told CNN affiliate KOMO. "We have some information about him; we're out looking for him."

The school's 1,700 students in grades 9-12 were to be sent home once police had determined there was no threat near the high school.

"We've never had anything like this, but we're prepared because of all the drills we do," Holmgren said.

Outside the school, the flag was hanging at half-staff in honor of the late President Ford.
