Two Alcohol Petitions Now Complete

Two petitions aimed at loosening restrictions on alcohol sales in the city of Longview are now complete.   Tuesday, petition leaders and Longview restaurant owners turned in the nearly 14,000signatures, each petition with about 7,000.

The first petition would let grocery stores currently in dry areas of Gregg County to sell beer and wine. The other would allow restaurants to sell mixed beverages without having to be a private club....something many restaurants owners say will help them out a lot.

"Oh, it's mean big savings, less hassle for the customers and ourselves. It's a big deal," says Gerard Cace, owner of Johnny Cace's Restaurant.

Now, the city has 30 days to verify the signatures. Once that is complete, it will be handed over to city council and put on the ballot for voters to decide May 5, 2007.
