Bald Eagles Off Endangered List

The symbol of our nation, the American Bald Eagle, is scheduled to be taken off the endangered species list. The eagle was once on the brink of extinction. Only a few thousand were left in the states. The massive use of pesticides like DDT in the 50's and 60's caused the animal to be placed on the endangered list. But now the bald eagle has a healthy population.

However, coming off the list has East Texas game wardens warning the public that the bird is "still" protected, and not to be used as a target.

"Just because the bald eagle is taken off the endangered species list that does not mean it's not protected, it is protected just like owls or raptors , hawks anything like that within the state of Texas is also protected" says Jennifer Inkster with Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Although the bald eagle will be taken off the national endangered list in February, Texas parks and wildlife have not yet decided whether it will be taken off the state endangered species list.
